Kim Medeiros earned All Around Cowgirl honors by just two points Sunday at the Kauai All Girls Rodeo Association event in Poipu.
Medeiros, who finished as All Around Cowgirl in 2012, settled in the top spot with 45 points. She was challenged hotly by Kristyn Vasconcelles, ending the 2012 year as Reserve All Around Cowgirl, who finished the six-event rodeo with 43 points for Reserve All Around Cowgirl honors at the CJM Country Stables.
Kim Medeiros captured not only first place, but Fast Time honors in goat tying, stopping the clocks at 26.44 for top honors, and clocking a 12.85 go for Fast Time honors.
The classic 1-2 battle showed itself in several events, Medeiros topping the Steer Undecorating event on a 4.74/2 average over Kristyn Vasconcelles’ 5.67/2 average for runner-up honors despite Kristyn Vasconcelles capturing Fast Time honors with a 2.23 go.
In that event, Kristyn Vasconcelles was just .06 faster in the averages than third-place finisher Cora Murayama, who tallied a 5.73/2 average.
Medeiros filled in the heeler spot for Hallie Cristobal in capturing top honors in the Dally Team roping event where the pair marked a 30.38/2 average.
Kristyn Vasconcelles teamed with Alexis Vasconcelles to capture Fast Time honor of 9.99 in the roping event, but with just one go, settled for third place with the run. Kristyn Vasconcelles also teamed with Cora Murayama for a 15.21/1 for fifth place in the event.
During the 3D Pole Bending event, the 1-2 battle showed itself in the 2nd D where Medeiros locked up second place on a 23.97 go followed by Kristyn Vasconcelles stopping the clock on a 24.487 go.
Medeiros went on to finish fourth in the 3rd D of Pole Bending, stopping the clock on a 25.94 go.
Kristyn Vasconcelles countered that performance by placing second in the 1st D of the 3D Barrel Racing event, stopping the clock on an 18.64 go.
Medeiros was hot on her run, stopping the clock at 18.88 for third place in the 1st D.
Kristyn Vasconcelles countered with a second finish in the 2nd D of Barrels, stopping the clock at 19.84.
The KAGRA cowgirls take July off before hosting the final KAGRA rodeo of the year on Aug. 4 at the CJM Country Stables.
During its month off, watch for the KAGRA cowgirls during the Koloa Plantation Days events.
