LIHUE — The Kauai Bronco and Mustang all-stars will be heading back to Kauai after spending five days in Hilo battling at the PONY Hawaii region champions.
But they will return without a trophy.
The Mustangs were able to sail into Tuesday’s title game in the driver’s seat as the only undefeated team in the tournament.
Kauai got there by beating Kona, Windward and Hilo. Kauai was met by Maui, who had to navigate its way through the loser’s bracket in order to play Kauai for the championship.
Because it is a double-elimination tournament, Maui needed to beat Kauai twice in order to be crowned champions.
Maui beat Kauai 16-0 in the first game and bounced back to beat them again 11-3 to win the tournament and earn a spot in the West Zone Tournament.
The Kauai Bronco all-stars had a rougher time in Hilo. After dispatching Windward in its opening round 7-2, Kauai went on to lose its next two games of the tournament.
They fell to Hilo 11-1, then faltered against Kona in a 6-5 heart-breaking loss to end its tournament Sunday.
Both teams Kauai lost to ended up in the championship game, with Hilo topping Kona 14-2.
