LIHUE — A brushfire caused a temporary closure of Kaumualii Highway in Kaumakani Friday night.
The blaze broke out along the eastbound shoulder of the highway shortly before 8 p.m., roughly a half mile from Kaumakani Camp, according to county officials. Firefighters from the Kalaheo and Hanapepe stations were on scene within 15 minutes and had the fire under control by 9 p.m.
The blaze scorched roughly 1,000 square feet of dry brush and was fully extinguished by 9:30 p.m.
No lives or property were threatened.
The eastbound lane of Kaumualii Highway was closed for more than an hour.
Police were on scene to direct alternating traffic flow from 8:20 p.m. to 9:50 p.m., when the highway reopened.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
