LIHUE — The state Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has approved a $41.2 million Kauai Island Utility Cooperative plan Wednesday to finance and build the state’s largest photovoltaic plant in Koloa
The 12-megawatt, 67-acre facility, according to approved PUC documents, will be built on land owned by Grove Farm Company-affiliate Haupu Land Company LLC and funded through a 25-year construction loan through National Cooperative Services Corporation, a Dulles, Va.-based cooperative financial servicer.
The cooperative estimates that the rate for each megawatt-hour of energy will be $165, but approved PUC documents stipulate that KIUC will not be able to curtail energy from the plant for more than 90 hours per calendar year.
Once the facility is placed into service, KIUC estimates that its members and customers will achieve about $275,000 per month in savings and use 3,600 fewer barrels of oil each month.
