KALAHEO — Briggs Agu played the entire game, netting 17 points Tuesday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Agu used the three-ball to pull the Westside D-2 boys from a 19-15 halftime deficit to overtake Team Central Silver for a 32-25 win during the Kaulupono summer basketball league.
Earlier in the night, Team Lihue girls forfeited its match to Kaulupono in another Division 2 match, and in the nightcap, Rebekah Corpuz netted 12 points to pull Team Lihue D-4 girls to a 34-2 win over the Team Central D-4 girls.
Following Corpuz’s lead, Marissa Layosa, Courtney Rosa and Tia Fulks each scored six points.
The Team Central D-4 pinkshirts got a pair with 10:35 showing in the second half when Jacy Harvey ignited the crowd with a bucket in traffic.
Harvey teamed with Eryka Napoleon to provide center support with Amayla Sales, Mackenna Tamanaha, and Skylyn Fagarang adding guard duty for the pinkshirts.
During the boys’ D-2 games, Westside went outside the three-point arc to pull ahead of Team Central Silver, and held off the tenacious squad in the final ticks of a defensively physical matchup.
Agu fired off two of the Westside’s three three balls, the third one coming from Kasen Castro in the second half. The trey was a part of Castro’s seven game-total points. Seaton Farias, along with Carter Koetje handling the low post duty, fired off five points, with Zech Ponting adding a pair and a first-half digit by Denez Haley, rounding out the victory.
Team Central Silver jumped to an early lead behind four points from Braden Armstrong and a three-ball from Andrew Vetter in the first half.
But Westside regrouped at the break and held Team Central Silver to just six second-half points, buckets coming from Joseph Cumlat, Keoka Teczon and Armstrong.
Armstrong finished with high score honors for Team Central on six points with Teczon adding five points, Cumlat getting four points in the effort.
The Kauai Ballers split its series Monday night in Kalaheo when the D1 Ballers nipped the Westside D-1 girls 37-35 before the Kauai Ballers D-2 girls came up a point short 25-24 against the Kaulupono D-2 girls.
“They played a really good game,” said Bobby Kamakele, Kaulupono coach. “We were up 10-8 at the half, and pulled out to a six, and eight-point lead in the second half. But the Ballers were really good in the stretch and caught up. They just couldn’t convert that last basket.”
Punani Tuttle topped the Ballers D-2 scoring on nine points with guar Jaliyah Casem adding four points.
Melia Okura topped the Kaulupono scoring with seven points followed by guard Monique Lorenzo adding six points and Breeann Cayaban finishing with five points.
During the Ballers’ D-1 matchup, Autumn Warnock led the charge with 16 points followed by Ariel Cummings adding nine points.
Paige Connelly topped the Westside D-1 girls’ scoring with 13 points followed by Shania Kahepuu and Mariyah Oliver each adding six points.
Agu, who was key in the Westside game Tuesday night, also topped the Westside D-2 boys’ win over Lepo Ula, Monday night Ague finished with 16 points, including two treys in that victory.
He got help from Farias, who added 10 points.
Kamea Palama-Alquiza topped the Lepo Ula scoring on 15 points with Reymund Mendoza adding 14 points.
No scores were available from the games played at the Kapaa High School gym.
