LIHUE — The latest development plans for Makahuena Point on the island’s southern tip will be reviewed at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Koloa Neighborhood Center.
The Koloa Community Association will host the general membership meeting, which will feature a presentation from the president and staff members from the Anchorage, Alaska-based corporation Cook Inlet Region Inc.
CIRI, a for-profit corporation to benefit Alaska Natives with ties to the Cook Inlet region, purchased the 14-acre, former U.S. Coast Guard LORAN site from the federal government in 1996.
The Makahuena property, once owned by William Bacle of Koloa, was conveyed to the United States government in 1907 and subdivided in 1932 into more than 25 legally recognized lots before the county’s comprehensive zoning ordinance was adopted.
CIRI spokesman Jason Moore said the property is zoned for about 25 residential units. He said company’s current proposal calls for at least half of that amount.
Company officials, he said, are considering a number of options for the property but want community input before proceeding.
