LIHUE — The Surfrider Foundation of Kauai wants you to join its cause. So the nonprofit is inviting the public out for a fun-filled shindig Friday.
“We haven’t had one of these for over four years,” Surfrider Chair Robert Zelkovsky said. “We just decided we wanted to increase our membership, and we thought the way to do it was with a fun event.”
The For Love of the Ocean Friend Raiser is from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Nawiliwili Yacht Club in Lihue.
“We are calling it a free event, but we will be accepting donations at the door,” Zelkovsky said.
For $25, attendees can become new members or renew a current membership.
The all-ages event will include food, refreshments, music by local band Goats With Headlamps and an Artists for the Ocean silent auction, featuring primarily ocean-related artwork.
Zelkovsky said it is a perfect opportunity for ocean enthusiasts to talk with one another, bid on silent auction items and meet with Surfrider volunteers and executive committee members, all while enjoying tunes for a good cause.
As their title suggests, Goats With Headlamps is not your ordinary duet. Becca Smith and Brett Alan Rouse have such a wide range of genres that they cannot be put into one, according to the band’s website.
“From the coffeehouse to the arena, they bring interesting hooks and time changes with a nod to the masters,” they claim on their site.
“These are the B-sides for music lovers that remember good music. If you like quirky, sexy and a little bit rugged, you’re going to love this.”
As part of International Surfing Day June 20, Surfrider of Kauai will be offering a $30 membership rate, which includes a T-shirt, magazine and stickers.
Now in its ninth year, ISD has grown to more than 200 separate events in more than 30 different countries, from paddle-outs to beach cleanups, surf movie nights to mangrove restorations, according to Surfrider.org.
“It’s worldwide,” Zelkovsky said. “It’s a weekend where basically fun events take place through all the Surfrider chapters.”
Those who purchase memberships at the ISD rate June 20 can bring their receipt to the Friday event at Nawiliwili Yacht Club for a free admission.
