Mr. Cellophane was a recent winner at the Long Beach Betta Show.
Over the weekend, Mr. Cellophane, a light solid color halfmoon betta, took top honors in the Division A3: Halfmoon Light Solid Color ST at the California Betta Society show.
Liz Hahn, Mr. Cellophane’s owner and a vendor of bettas at the Saturday Kauai Community Market at the Kauai Community College, was thrilled with the honor.
“He won, again,” the elated Westside Kauai breeder said. “Originally, I wasn’t even going to send him to the Long Beach show, but he kept begging through the glass, ‘Send me! Send me!’”
Hahn finished the California Betta Society show with six first place honors, including top honors in Breeder’s Division Form and Finnage.
She also took a Best of Variety for her Halfmoon St. Male, the earner of the Form and Finnage class award. The fish went on to win Best in Show, Male honors after getting the class award for Form and Finnage.
She also earned four second place awards, including one for Form and Finnage, a Butterfly STM in the Halfmoon Patterned ST class, and two Marble/Grizzle ST, one a male and the other a female in the Halfmoon Patterned ST class.
Hahn also pocketed three third prize awards in the show, which featured nearly 420 fish filling more than 400 entries.
Her third place award came in the Halfmoon Patterned ST division for a male Butterfly ST, a female Butterfly ST and a Marble/Grizzle ST male where she finished by taking the first, second and third place.
What pleased Hahn beyond Mr. Cellophane’s win, was the to placing of her Show Plakat Iridescent/Metallic Male in the Shortfin division.
Since the news of her achievements at the Long Beach show, Hahn has been getting an increasing number of people interested in breeding the bettas, rather than acquiring one just as a pet.
Hahn encourages those people, noting that if there are enough people doing bettas, she would love to start a club on Kauai where people could talk fish.
Although Mr. Cellophane is in California, Hahn is quick to point out Mr. Cellophane’s brother at her Saturday appearance at the market held in partnership with the Kauai Farm Bureau.
She will also be glad to show you fish related to her award-winning specimens.
The Kauai Community Market is open Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
