LIHUE — Three Kauai golfers are heading to the Mainland this summer to participate in tournaments.
Trevor Kua, Jamie Amimoto and Bryden Salvador, all golfers in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation program, will be heading to different tournaments on the Mainland based on their performances, said Alton Amimoto, a Kauai Junior Golf Association parent.
Kua, who plays with the Kauai High School program, will be heading to the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships at the Torrey Pines South in La Jolla, Calif., from July 15 through 19.
He earned eligibility for that tournament by finishing first in the 2013 Hawaii State Junior Golf Association 2013 Callaway Junior World Qualifier which was contested at the Wailua Golf Course last week.
During the two-round tournament, Kua stayed at the head of his field, firing a 2-over par 74 in the opening round, two strokes ahead of Remingon Hirano of Honolulu. He improved his game during the final round, carding a 1-over par 73 for a two-day 147, two strokes better than Hirano’s 149 (76-73).
The mission of the Junior World Golf Championships, founded in 1968 by the San Diego Junior Golf Association, is youth. During its inagural year, 475 juniors participated representing seven countries and 20 states.
Since then, the tournament has grown to 1,200 participants representing 56 countries and 42 states, making it the largest international event in the world, and is unique for its international representation and cultural diversity, states its website.
