LIHUE — A Lihue man who was arrested Saturday after driving his pickup truck into the ocean has been identified.
Norman Akana, Jr., age 38, was arrested for Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant, Refusal to Submit to Testing and Reckless Driving, according to County of Kauai spokeswoman Sarah Blane.
He remained in police cellblock Sunday in lieu of $4,000 bail.
According to police, the man had been driving his truck along the beach, in an area known as Kitchens behind the Wailua Golf Course, when the truck was struck by a wave that pulled it into the surf.
Akana was alone during the time of the incident. He had exited his Ford F-150 without injury by the time police and firefighters arrived at the scene.
Three tow companies were needed to pull the fully submerged truck from the water.
