LIHUE — Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, Lihue Clubhouse leaders stepped up to the plate Friday when Kauai firefighters responded to an emergency.
Originally, the firefighters were scheduled to plant eight banana trees and five papaya trees to augment the community gardens at the Lihue Court townhomes.
The event culminated a week-long celebration where the public was invited to tour the facility.
But when it was time for the planting, an emergency arose triggering the firefighters into action.
B&G Hawaii, Lihue Clubhouse leaders took charge and with the help of numerous young hands, worked to dig holes for the new banana and papaya plants.
Brian Alston, the project manager, said in addition to the planting, the Lihue Court townhomes received a grant, which will provide recycling bins for the residents.
B&G Club, Lihue Clubhouse leader also took care of that project, using the cardboard shipping containers to fashion makeshift wind screens to prevent overspray from the stenciling of unit numbers onto the containers.
The Lihue Court townhomes is managed by Mutual Housing Association.
