KAPAA — The girls of the Garden Island Renegade Rollers are preparing for the Battle of the Islands.
“All of the teams will be on Maui June 29 for the Battle of the Islands,” said Roxy Quickkiller. “Tonight is just for the GIRR who will play the Mean Girls (black) against the Clean Girls (white) in an exhibition scrimmage game.”
Because of the Americans with Disabilities Act work taking place at the Kapaa Inline Hockey Rink, space was limited and GIRR asked spectators to bring their own seating because the normal bleachers were cordoned off for work being done on the ADA ramp.
Roller derby, normally fielding teams of 15 for major bouts like the upcoming Battle of the Islands, was short teamed with the Mean Girls fielding five players and the Clean Girls also fielding a five-roller team.
Instead of playing the 30-minute halves for the regulation one-hour bout, scrimmage was instead cut to 20-minute halves with a 40-second break between jams.
The shortened time also coincided with passing showers, the half being called during one passage when skating stops due to safety concerns, the announcer describing the stoppage as rain delays.
As in the movies, the white, or Clean Girls, prevailed over the Mean Girls, the Clean Girls getting strong offense from jammers Taminator T2, Michelle O-Bomber and Maelstorm while its defense held the Mean Girls’ Jen-A-Roll, Carrie Prankster, and Carnie to a 47-12 showing at the rain-shortened half.
