LIHUE — Leinaala Pavao Jardin will share her passion for hula during a presentation and performance Saturday at the Kauai Museum in Lihue
Jardin’s love for traditional Hawaiian dance led her on a journey from learning hula as a young girl to becoming a kumu hula (hula instructor). Her students perform at the Merrie Monarch Festival, the most prestigious hula festival in the world.
The event Saturday is from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
In addition to talking about the history of hula, Jardin will demonstrate traditional Hawaiian chanting. Afterward, her students will treat the audience to a brief performance.
“Hula is my passion,” Jardin said in a release for the event. “When I dance, I feel humbled but filled with pride. I want my students to feel love for the hula because they are sharing our culture.”
The conversation will be facilitated by Pamela Brown, author of the book “Kauai Stories,” a collection of more than 50 colorful, touching and humorous personal stories about aspects of Hawaii life, including Jardin’s.
This talk story event is part of the Kauai Museum’s ongoing Author Series, which highlights the work of talented local writers.
Regular admission to the Kauai Museum is $10. However, Saturday is the museum’s Ohana Day and all Kauai residents and museum members get in for free.
