LIHUE — Changing out windows at the Lihue Public Library is one of the milestones of the renovation project.
Wednesday, a seven-member crew from KKK Aluminum and Glass in Honolulu, started work to change the five damaged glass panels.
“We spent the greater part of Tuesday gathering material and preparing the areas for the glass installation,” said Jerry Kashimoto, president of KKK Aluminum.
Work could be done by Friday.
Carolyn Larson, Lihue Public Library manager, said one of the windows being replaced during the renovation project is a window damaged by Hurricane ‘Iniki in 1992.
The resulting holes, both in the adult area, were boarded up and the window replacement will open up the spaces.
“There are many facets to the renovation, and the replacement of the damaged windows is just one part of the project,” Larson said.
The crews used a special forklift modified rig to move the large glass panels.
“We leased this rig especially for this project,” Kashimoto said.
Larson said she is grateful to her staff and patrons for working through the project and enabling the library to continue service.
She said the Summer Reading Program will run from June 2 through July 6. People can check with the interim public library set up in the conference room for more details.
The interim library is open to the public on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday hours are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The library is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
It will also be closed on June 11 in observance of Kamehameha Day.
