Catholic Church coverups
Inviting, as you do on a regular basis, a conservative Catholic to preach morality to us is absurd on the surface.
Forgetting all of the various harms the church has precipitated all through the centuries would be one thing, IF there weren’t an almost constant stream of new abuses coming out.
If the Boy Scouts or a school, for example, had to deal with the same level of abuse AND cover-ups, that organization would go down in flames.

Kokee Discovery Center program amazing
I had the huge privilege of experiencing the overnight school program at the Discovery Center in Kokee with my daughter a few weeks ago.
My daughter is in the first grade at Kilauea School with Mr. Schumacher.
I am writing to you today to express my sincere appreciation and awe of this program. What an amazing offering and experience this is for our keiki and for our parents, too.
What we experienced there was something that will imprint our lives forever. I believe with all my heart that this program weaves our community together in a way I have yet to experience. I could tell that everyone there was grateful for being there.
I left with a deep gratitude for my daughter’s teacher, a huge shift in my perception of the public school system, and an infused spark of inspiration from the remarkable Uncle Bill and Terry.
The entire program, from the grounds facility to directors, was top notch and I was left wondering how our entire island chain could experience this type of education and experience consistently and more often.
Uncle Bill has a true gift to be shared. He has obviously affected Mr. Schumacher in such powerful ways and now Mr. Schumacher brings that passion and love into his classroom everyday. How can we get Uncle Bill consistently training up our teachers, creating this motivation and passion as a continuous energy and inspiration boost for them. Our teachers take on huge responsibilities and they are so awesome. I see Uncle Bill as a huge asset and teacher to them.
I want to share with you my gratitude for gifting our community, now of which I feel are more like Ohana, to our kids and to our island. What would be possible in seeing this program grow beyond our wildest dreams?
If I were to describe our overnight in just a few words, they would be: Aloha, Ohana, Mahalo.

Airport/taxi squabble effecting visitors
I read a piece in your paper (Sunday, May 26) about the problems you are having at the airport. Being a visitor to your island and not knowing about your customs I can only relate what happened to us last week.
We arrived after a long day of traveling from the Midwest and we were tired.
It took over 15 minutes before a taxi came to take us to our hotel. To add insult to injury, we then had to run out in the rain to get to the taxi. On the ride the taxi driver apologized for the delay and blamed everything on the people who run the airport.
This was not a good way to welcome people to Hawaii. This letter can’t help us, but hopefully it will help others in the future.

Victim of Koloa Road fire needs your help
Recently The Garden Island reported the fire of a home on Koloa Road with damages at $400,000. It stated that the Red Cross gave assistance at the end of the article.
The owner of the trust is still trying to live on the property with her animals. The fenced in space is limited. The burning smells are still in the air nightly blocks away.
It is evident that in order for the woman to stay there, the burned debris must be cleared. But on a retired, fixed, meager income, that seems impossible to even neighbors.
Left ignored, the neighborhood can expect an increase of pests, vermin and rodents.
So my plea is to those who pass no judgment, and can see only a need to help and improve the life of another. Let us come together to help another, put all judgments to past and go above and beyond the expectations of others to help a long-time neighbor in need — someone who lost a home in a fire.
