KALAHEO — Briggs Agu netted a game-high 26 points to lead Westside to a 51-40 win over the Bad Boys on Thursday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
With a 21-20 halftime lead, Westside turned to long range, firing off three of its four treys in the second half to outgun the Bad Boys en route to its win in the Boys 2 division.
Briggs Agu topped Westside in scoring, netting a trio from outside the 3-point arc.
Carter Koetje, anchoring a low post position for Westside, added eight points. Agu anchored the second low post position.
D.J. Pabre added seven points, all in the second half, and Kasen Castro finished with six points. Zach Ponting finished with a pair.
John Lee Villanueva led the Bad Boys with a dozen marks followed by Kirvie Valdez adding eight points and A.J. Tanagon netting six points. Ardino Ned added four points, Irish Pascua and King Blanes each netted three points, Blanes getting the sole trey for the Bad Boys. Pairs from Jhanel Mar and Rendel Jim figured in the effort.
“The season just started and we haven’t had time to practice, yet,” said Bad Boys coach Steve Decker. “Tonight was simply to burn calories and see what we need to work on.”
Reymund Mendola fired off a game-high 20 points, including three first-half treys, to lead Lepo Ula to a 45-26 win over Team Lihue in the opener.
Lepo Ula rattled off 27 points in the first half, fueled by Mendola and Justin Fune, who got five of his game-total eight points in the first half.
Kawika Alquiza ended with eight points, Kicoh Acosta finished with four, Noah Sasil ended with three and Kelly Ragasa had two.
Team Lihue got eight points from Waylon Jicta and Mark Lacreina. Elmer Pascua Jr. had a trey in his first-half five points with Inok Lautej Jr. and Tajh Mapuhi each ending with pairs. A digit from Emilio Lalita rounded out the effort.
Coach Bobby Kamakele of the Kaulupono summer basketball league said the game formats for the summer is in halves, rather than quarters because a lot of the kids travel and off-island tournaments are almost all run on halves.
He said the older students play 14-minute halves while the younger students are on the floor for 12-minute halves.
The Kaulupono summer league, which opened its season on Tuesday, features four teams in the Girls 1 division, or players in Grades 10 through 12, five teams in the Girls 2 division, or players in grades 8 and 9, three teams in Girls 3, or players in grades 6 and 7, and four teams in Girls 4 division, or players in grades 3 through 5.
There are eight teams in the Boys 2 division, or players in grades 8 and 9, nine teams in the Boys 3 division, or players in grades 6 and 7, and seven teams in the Boys 4 division, or players in grades 3 through 5.
Games are played on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center and at the Kapaa High School gym.
