LIHUE — The small space had room for books Friday when the Rotary Club of Kauai arrived.
Ron Morin, Rotary Club of Kauai president, and Dick Olsen, regional vice chairman of Rotary Clubs, unloaded a big box of new books, a gift to the Lihue Public Library.
“The Rotary Club of Kauai has been a steadfast supporter of libraries and literacy in our community,” said Carolyn Larson, branch manager at the Lihue Public Library. “On behalf of the Lihue Public Library, we thank them for their commitment to reading.”
The new titles, recently published fiction and non-fiction titles, were quickly loaded onto a cart for processing so library patrons can access them.
The contribution, valued at about $750, is part of an annual program hosted by the Rotary Club of Kauai to support literacy on Kauai. The books were selected by the librarians.
“Literacy has always been one of the Rotary initiatives,” Olsen said.
The new books join the limited offering in the Lihue Public Library’s interim library space situated in the library’s conference room. The interim library offers some of the standard library services including picking up requested items, browsing new books, and DVD rentals.
“It’s a small space, but we’re making it work,” said Lisa Post, library circulation manager. “However, due to space limitations, we cannot provide a place to hang out, but library patrons are so grateful they are still able to borrow and return materials in Lihue, while the library is being renovated.”
Larson said the list of online library services is growing.
“People are not switching from print to electronic books, in our experience,” Larson said.
“They’re using both of them. There are many readers who like the convenience of electronic formats, but they still love the feeling of a real book in their hands and wouldn’t want to give that up.”
Larson said this situation demonstrates the importance of a library partnership with groups like the Rotary Club of Kauai.
The books contributed by the Rotary Club of Kauai will be incorporated into the New Books Collection and will be available to browse and borrow at the interim Lihue Public Library, which is open to the public Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday hours are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The library is closed Saturdays and Sundays.
