Editor’s note: Old-timers might still remember the introduction from The Shadow radio program: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” Jerome Freitas, a retired state Department of Transportation worker who is now better known as Da Shadow, since 2004 has been meeting with government representatives about problems he has discovered or that have been reported to him, and reporting the county’s responses.
Hauiki Road
Da Shadow: There are severe cracks in this road after you turn onto it from Olohena, and also rubbish along the county’s right of way. When will these things be addressed?
County: After visual inspection of Hauiki, the road is structurally sound. Recommendation at subject area will be full depth reconstruction including sub base pending core samples, which will be taken first to determine the depth for reconstruction. The cracks will be sealed with epoxy to eliminate water penetration until we can schedule long-term repairs. Trash removal to be scheduled shortly.
Anahola Homestead Village
Da Shadow: There were supposed to be ADA upgrades at this facility. What is the status of this project?
County: We believe you are referring to a Hawaiian Homelands housing complex. As such, ADA upgrades would be a Department of Hawaiian Homelands Project, not a county project. The county did complete ADA retrofits to the Anahola Community Center several years ago.
Hauiki Road
Da Shadow: Just past the area described in the last question, there are barricades and a “Road Closed” sign at a turnoff to what looks like an unfinished subdivision.
County: This is part of the Hauiki Road Realignment and is associated with the Kulana subdivision improvements. The roadway remains closed until the subdivision improvements are certified complete and the realigned roadway dedicated to the county.
