Actions must be taken regarding TVRs
If the serious allegations about the county staff not enforcing — over the past three years — a very important county ordinance, prove true, then the county managing director, Gary Heu, should be fired. The ordinance, which passed in July 2010, related to the protection of agriculture land and clearly states that, going forward, no Transient Vacation Rentals (TVRs) on agriculture lands would be allowed.
There are now substantial allegations that include fraud, applicants lying, misstatements and the County Operations Department not catching irregularities and ignoring flood zones and that millions of dollars in profits were made because people received windfall profits they should not have gotten.
When Heu was asked by Councilwoman JoAnn Yukimura if an investigation task force would be able to bring at least one case to court in the next three months, Heu gave the classic bureaucratic answer. Heu said that the administration would like to move “as quickly as possible.”
In response, Councilwoman JoAnn wisely said: “So the answer to my question is ‘yes’; because when you say ‘as soon as possible’ it has no meaning to us, because ‘as soon as possible’ has meant one, two or three years.” Good for JoAnn.
The ruling body is the elected county council — not the bureaucracies — and when an ordinance is not enforced, the person in charge should be held responsible and action should be taken.
When President Truman and President elect Eisenhower were going from the White House to the Capital — for Eisenhower’s swearing in as president — Truman gave Eisenhower some advice. “When you were a general, you would give an order and it would be carried out. As president, you are going to give an order and not a damn thing is going to happen.”
Well let’s hope that in this case — if the allegations prove true — action will be taken.

Grads, prove me wrong
TGI’s editorial to the recent graduates is both timely and meaningful. However, I am troubled as to whether you reach the audience you presupposed reads your paper.
It is my belief that very few recent graduates read your paper or any paper and rarely any books.
Graduates, take a moment and refute my comments with your letters to the editor. Restore my faith in the educational system on the island of Kaua‘i.
Show me the abilities that you have learned to think critically. Tell me the values expressed in the editorial and I would be pleased to say I was wrong.

All third trimester abortions murder
In the editorial of May 20 (by Kathryn Lopez), you acknowledge that Dr. Kermit Gosnell’s behavior was barbaric, evidenced by his killing of at least three babies by cutting their spinal cords after they were born alive.
It is also a well known fact that in banning abortions after 12 weeks or 26 weeks in Pennsylvania and Arkansas, those states would be in violation of Roe vs. Wade.
There have been studies completed that indicate that a fetus has all the parts and is completely developed, a heartbeat is also there at 12 weeks. One sees babies in incubators at less than 20 weeks who go on to be thriving adults.
We have to stop this laissez faire attitude toward killing babies. Kermit Gosnell is not the only doctor throwing babies in trash bins. Any doctor who performs third trimester abortions is just as guilty as Dr. Gosnell, the only difference is that his clinic may be cleaner and not have a flea ridden cat running around.
As tough as it might seem, women need to have more self control since it has been proven that the majority of abortions are conducted as a birth control measure. Surveys have been conducted stating that most Americans are not in favor of abortion.
Planned Parenthood claims they are pro-choice but the only choice they give a woman is abortion and birth control, not adoption.
In claiming to be an advocate for women’s health they should regard the health of the baby. It is always easy to kill something if one perceives it is not a living thing, hence the name fetus instead of baby.
Abortion should be outlawed, it is a form of murder. Roe vs Wade should be reversed. It was a bad decision by the Supreme Court.
