Editor’s note: Old-timers might still remember the introduction from The Shadow radio program: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” Jerome Freitas, a retired state Department of Transportation worker who is now better known as Da Shadow, since 2004 has been meeting with government representatives about problems he has discovered or that have been reported to him, and reporting the county’s responses.
Islandwide
Da Shadow: At one time, it was promised that the hurricane clips that are old and rusted would be replaced. What’s the update on this replacement project?
County: At various parks where those are identified a work order is put in to Public Works for corrective action. At Lydgate and Po‘ipu parks, upgrades to these facilities will address this issue in the near future.
Lihi Park
Da Shadow: At the Lihi Park a sign has fallen and is leaning against a tree branch. Can it be removed or put back into place so it doesn’t cause a safety hazard?
County: Our Parks personnel will inspect immediately and take appropriate action.
Lihu‘e Baseball
Da Shadow: What is the update on scheduled improvements to this facility?
County: We are currently completing the design in house, and will submit for permits shortly for the “Vidinha Baseball Field.” This project is anticipated to be bid in July 2013. Likewise, construction is anticipated to start in October-November 2013. This project includes new ADA walk ways, dugouts, announcers booth and lighting.

Da Shadow: In the past 12 months, have any workers been hired from the “labor lists” established for Public Works and Parks? If so, how many?
County: In the past 12 months, Public Works has hired four employees from the labor list. Parks has hired no employees from the labor list.
