When people need help, they often turn to the Salvation Army, said Eugene Jimenez.
The Salvation Army board member was one of the many volunteers who turned out Wednesday to help with the senior luncheon for Westside and South Shore kupuna.
The luncheon during Salvation Army Week May 13 through 19 was geared for fellowship and an opportunity for the kupuna to come together with the different senior groups offering entertainment.
“We say it’s for the seniors, but anyone is able to come and have a meal,” said Lt. Austin Anderson. “We also have specials in the Thrift Store to celebrate Salvation Army Week.”
Loel Mawae, Lihu‘e thrift store manager, said there will be discounts on almost everything from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
Clothing, TVs, housewares, pictures and a lot of toilets, many in like-new condition, will be on sale.
The Salvation Army, through its Kokua Soup Kitchen programs at the Lihu‘e and Hanapepe Corps, feeds several hundred people weekly through its three-times-a-week schedule, including a hot meal for dinner and a lunch program.
The Salvation Army provided emergency assistance during Hurricane ‘Iniki when thousands of Kaua‘i residents needed help in the wake of the 1992 storm.
