McKenna Lopez-Estacio of Kaua‘i High School threw the discus more than 160 feet to claim top honors at the state track meet Saturday.
Lopez-Estacio measured a 163-03 throw to win at the Mililani High School facility on O‘ahu.
His performance led the Kaua‘i boys to 11th place with 18 points at the Island Movers Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association State Track and Field Championships.
Baldwin High School boys of Maui took first with 66.25 points. The Kapa‘a High School boys finished 27th with two points.
Kaua‘i senior Kawehi Louis-Diamond was second in the girls 100 meter hurdles, stopping the clock at 15.25, just behind Emma Taylor of Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy’s 15.22.
The performance topped the Kaua‘i girls effort, which landed them a 16th place finish with eight points. Punahou School girls topped the field with 69 points. Waimea High School girls finished 21st with four points.
Waimea High School junior Kawena Warren finished fourth in the girls high jump, after tying freshman Amy Ozee of Seabury Hall on a leap of 5 feet.
In that event, Warren’s teammate, Talia Young finished on the front end of a judges’ decision at 14th place, breaking a five-way tie at 8 feet.
Kaena Kaohelauli‘i, a Waimea freshman, added to the points tally with her seventh finish in the girls 100 meters, where she stopped the clock at 13.17. Senior Raion Black of Christian Academy won in 12.58.
In the girls 1,500 meter run, Kaua‘i sophomore Krista Schnackenberg crossed the tape in eighth at 5:10, the pace of that event being set by HPA senior Zoe Sims, who broke the state record set in 1999 by Punahou’s Victoria Chang.
Sims and runner-up Dakota Grossman both surpassed the state record of 4:38.83 with their respective times of 4:36.22 and 4:37.23.
Island School joined the excitement in the girls 3,000 meter run, where Voyager senior Joy Claypoole crossed the line in 10th place in 11:04.10, bettering her KIF record of 11:21.97.
The pace for that field was set by Grossman who crossed the line at 10:36.77, nearly two seconds ahead of Punahou freshman Teri Brady in 10:38.56.
The excitement in the 3,000 meter track was not limited to the girls as Kaua‘i senior Joshua Herr, a consistent strong long distance runner, finished second on a 9:04.09 run, less than a second behind Jacq Herbert of Punahou (9:03.79). Herr’s run was also faster than his performance during the KIF season when he posted a 9:17.58.
