LIHU‘E — Football fans received a preview of the fall season Thursday when the Kapa‘a Warriors football team hosted its Green-and-White spring game.
In addition to getting a dose of football ahead of the schedule, the Kapa‘a High School cheer squad capitalized on the night under the lights by hosting a food booth.
“This is just a time when the boys can showcase their talent and achievements to coaches and their parents,” said Kapa‘a coach Keli‘i Morgado.
The Warriors didn’t play as a complete unit — some seniors were busy with graduation plans, other team members who also play baseball were in O‘ahu participating in the Division II state tournament, and the new players in the eighth grade were unable to get in on the practice until school was over.
But that didn’t stop people from turning out to support the Warriors as several hundred fans filled the stands on a Thursday evening, reveling in the football and the clear, crisp weather.
“He’s got nice hands,” said Fred Levinthol, one of the Kapa‘a coaches, referring to Nick Hantz, who pulled in a touchdown pass for about 20 yards. “He’s new to the program, but he’s got a soft touch.”
Hantz was a key Kapa‘a player on the boys volleyball team, filling the middle and outside hitter positions where his power and strength helped the Warriors on the front line.
Fresno Masaniai filled in one of the quarterback spots with Rudy Agoot taking the No. 2 snap and appearances by Shain Davis as the No. 3 signal caller.
Coming off the game, the Warrior football players turned out in force Saturday to greet the more than 2,000 walkers at the annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk. They presented the walkers with tokens of appreciation as well as heaping praise on their accomplishment of the 2.9-mile walk.
The Warriors return to the practice field, but the pads go back in the locker room until the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation football season.
Morgado said there will be more opportunities to see the boys on the field when the summer pass league (no pads) opens.
