LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Police Department is celebrating National Police Week with several public events planned to allow the public a chance to see how law enforcement works to keep the island safe.
“Police Week is our opportunity to pay tribute to law enforcement officers who gave their lives in the line of duty, and to honor their loved ones,” said Kaua‘i Chief of Police Darryl Perry. “It is also a time that we encourage the public to get to know the police department and our officers by participating in Police Week activities.”
The week-long festivities begin Monday with a public memorial service to honor those officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The service will start at 9 a.m. at the breezeway of Ka Hale Makai o Kaua‘i, KPD headquarters.
On Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. will hold a proclamation ceremony at the Lihu‘e Civic Center, Moikeha courtyard. The Kaua‘i County Council will then host its recognition ceremony on Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. at the Historic County Building’s Council Chambers.
The Kaua‘i Police Department will close Police Week with an open house Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the public is also invited to tour the department’s Incident Command Vehicle. Reservations are not required.
The Kaua‘i Police Department Safety Art Contest that started on May 3, will conclude with an awards ceremony on May 14 at 4 p.m. at Kukui Grove Center. Children ages 17 and under are still invited to submit an illustration of an example of “safety.” Drop off entries on standard size 8.5” x 11” paper to the Kukui Grove Center management office form 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.
