WAIPAHU — The Kapa‘a High School Warriors struck early with a run but failed to add to its total in the opening game of the Wally Yonamine Foundation Division II Baseball Championships Thursday.
Kamehameha School Hawai‘i capitalized on the Warriors’ lack of offense to win 2-1 and advance to the semifinals against No. 1 Waianae.
“In the first inning our small ball game worked,” said Kapa‘a head coach Bryan Aiwohi. “If it wasn’t for some bad base running and a couple bad at bats I think we could have tied the game.”
Kapa‘a’s lone run came on a bunt from Rashan Kuahaulua in the first inning, which allowed A.J. Cummings to score.
The Warrior offense was anemic as it came away with just one hit.
Kuhualua came on in relief of Nick Tabura despite suffering from cramps. He went on to throw two shutout innings and worked himself out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh.
“We are going to keep battling, and we will bounce back tomorrow,” said Aiwohi.
The loss drops Kapa‘a into the consolation bracket to play Kaimuki High School of Honolulu today at 10 a.m.
The Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders men’s volleyball team upset No. 4 Farrington in straight sets 25-23, 25-19, 25-21 at the 2013 New City Nissan Boys Division II Volleyball Championships. They will play either No. 1 Hawai‘i Baptist or Hawai‘i Prep. The results for that game was not ready by press time.
