LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders boys volleyball team will open up with Farrington High School Thursday at 5 p.m. in the New City Nissan Boys Volleyball State Championships. Farrington enters the tournament ranked number 4 while the Raiders are not ranked.
Kaua‘i finished the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation season winning all of its games in the second round including the one game playoff it had against the Kapa‘a Warriors to win the KIF title.
“They have big hitters,” said Kaua‘i head coach Merrill Carvalho. “They have improved a lot during the season. One of the most important things is to be able to pass. We have to be consistent in our passing game.”
Coach Carvalho also described his team’s ability to block the Farrington hitters as an important aspect of the match.
If Kaua‘i can get past Farrington, it will face either No. 1 Hawai‘i Baptist or Hawai‘i Prep in the semifinals.
The tournament also includes No. 2 Seabury, No. 3 Pahoa, Waialua and Campbell.
