LIHU‘E — Children donned the finery of Cinco de Mayo during a Fun with Spanish presentation at the Kukui Grove Center on Sunday.
“Ana Meyers just called and said she had these students who would love to perform for Cinco de Mayo,” said Jonel Kaohelauli‘i, the marketing manager for Kukui Grove.
With the help of her son John, Meyers led the keiki garbed in traditional Mexican wear and sporting maracas as they high-stepped onto the stage in tune with “La Cucaracha,” one young man emphasizing the “Cha!”
The younger students went through the steps of performing selected Spanish words and taking the time to read a personal Spanish dialog for appreciative parents and shoppers.
Fun with Spanish offers classes for ages 4 through 13 as well as individual lessons for families and adults.
The Cinco de Mayo holiday commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, states the Mexonline.com website.
May 5 also was also the Children’s Day celebration, a Japanese tradition brought to Hawai‘i by the Japanese immigrants more than a hundred years ago.
