LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Philippine Cultural Center project will hold its second fundraiser from 5 to 9 p.m. May 11 at Kaua‘i Marriott, 3610 Rice Street.
The theme, “Beats and Rhythms of Our Cultural Diversity” includes a cultural program that includes the many ethnicity’s of the island. The $75 ticket includes dinner, the program and prizes to support the KPCC mission to build a venue that will be used for generations.
“The program reflects KPCC’s mission and unique endeavor to build a very special cultural venue as ‘A Place For All’ said KPCC Board Member Millie Wellington.
Dickie Chang will serve as master of ceremonies.
The performers bridge the historical blend of roots that comprise the Hawaiian Islands. The fundraiser also brings full appreciation of a unique cultural heritage, Wellington said, and reflects the KPCC mission to build a comprehensive cultural venue.
Kauai’s own Kaleo Trinidad from Kamehameha Schools will perform, as will the hula halau of Ka Lei Mokihana O Leinaala Pavao Jardin with its program that placed third in the kahiko division at the 50th Merrie-Monarch Hula competition in Hilo.
Other performers include former Bailes de Jose dancers, taiko drummers Aki Conquest and a master Portuguese ukulele player.
Organizers hope to match the success of the first fundraiser in April 2012. The event drew more than 650 people from Kaua‘i and the Neighbor Islands.
The County of Kaua‘i expressed approval of the project in 2012 by providing land adjacent to the Puhi YMCA. It was in part for the project’s “A Place For All” spirit of community benefit.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed a $1.5 million grant-in-aid funding request for the project on April 11, which assured completion of the first phase preliminary work and construction of a side building. It was requested by State Rep. James Tokioka.
The commitment will aid in future fundraising efforts to complete the $5 to 6 million main building and infrastructure and parking lots.
