News from KCC: Courses for summer and fall
Selected courses
Business Division
The new Business and Accounting Fast Track is a way to get a year’s worth of college credit through Distance Learning in only six months without having to attend a class. Business Instructor Becky Santos is the contact for the Accounting classes (245-8242) and Instructor Tim Stuck is the contact for the Business classes (245-8228).
The Business Division will also offer Hospitality Management (HOST 290) in the fall. The course examines the management process in hospitality operations, focusing on the management functions of planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling to bring about organizational effectiveness. Health Education Division
KCC will be offering the training required for eligibility for licensure by the State Department of Health to operate an Adult Residential Care Home (ARCH). The program will begin on May 31 and end on June 30. Special admission requirements include having at least completed a Nurse Aide Training Program. Language, Arts and Humanities Division
Spanish 101 and Spanish 201 are now being offered as face-to-face and distance classes. For more information contact Mary Fatora-Tumbaga at fatoratu@hawaii.edu.
FR 101 is French for beginners. The course explores French culture while learning to listen, speak, read and write in French. Contact Molly Summers at summersm@hawaii.edu.
The Digital Media Program will be offering Art 157 and Art 267, Introduction and Intermediate Video Storytelling. The courses are for people who are interested in shooting and editing their own videos with a professional look. Contact Gary Ellwood at gellwood@hawaii.edu.
The Art Department will offer Introduction to Drawing (Art 113) in which students will learn to draw confidently in charcoal, ink and pastel. Introduction to Painting (Art 123) will teach basic skills and color theory. Contact Stephanie Britt at britts@hawaii.edu for more information.

Philosophy Instructor Chris Tennberg will be offering two philosophy courses during the summer sessions. Philosophy 101 (Morals and Society) is an introduction to ethics. Topics considered in the course include abortion, euthanasia, pornography and censorship and global poverty. Religion 150 (Introduction to World Religions) takes up the origin, development and major beliefs and practices of the world’s largest religious traditions.
Additionally, Chris will be offering a new course in the Fall semester. Philosophy 198V (Film and Philosophy) will analyze a group of movies in light of the philosophical themes that they embody. For more information contact Chris at ctennber@hawaii.edu.
Greg Shepherdz will be teaching Beginning Acting (Theater 221) in the fall semester. The course will focus on stage presence and effective delivery of monologues and scenes from plays. The English Department is offering English 22 (Introduction to Composition) and English 100 (Composition I) in the evening during the summer session at a reduced tuition rate. Another English Department course that will be offered during the summer is ENG 250, American Literature. History Instructor Alan Boyes brings his inimitable teaching style to two courses this summer. History 151 covers human history from our earliest origins through the year 1500, and History 152 picks up where History 151 leaves off. Students will have important questions answered, such as whether Christopher Columbus was a visionary or simply someone who needed to pay more attention in math class, how important is admittance to art school, and what do Rocky and Bullwinkle have to do with the Cold War?
Science and Math Division
The Science and Math Division will be offering a Marine Biology course for science majors wishing to transfer to a four-year biology degree at University of Hawai‘i at Manoa or students wishing to transfer to a four-year Marine Biology degree at UH Hilo. It will cover everything that is covered in a traditional biology class but with a marine emphasis. For more information contact Willow Jorgenson at annj@hawaii.edu.
Coco Chi, Instructor in Developmental Math, will offer a summer math “boot camp” at absolutely no cost from August 12 through the 15. The program is designed to provide a review of math concepts for students who placed into MATH 21, MATH 22, MATH 50 or students who are going to take MATH 26 in Fall 2013. Nan Greer will be teaching a new course in geography in the fall semester, Introduction to G.I.S. (Geographic Information Systems, or digital mapping). It is listed as Geography 189. Trade Technology

Mark Anderson will be teaching a new course titled Cisco Router & Switching Security (ETRO299v), which is a hands-on career-oriented course. Also, Cisco CCNA Routing & Switching (ETRO140B) will be taught during the academic year. Contact Mark at markra@hawaii.edu.
Introduction to Computer Programming (ICS111) will also be offered by Trade Technology in the fall. The course covers computer programming using the C# language. Contact Georgeanne Friend at friend2@hawaii.edu
Automotive Technology will offer AMT16 (Car Care) and AMT18 (Minor Tune-up) in the fall semester. The classes are meant to assist vehicle owners perform maintenance and light repairs on their cars. Contact Tante Azares at azares@hawaii.edu.
Other news
During spring break in March, KCC Nursing students traveled to Japan for an exchange program with Nagasaki University. Students participated in discussions about nursing curricula and health care and visited several health care facilities, including the nursing home for survivors of the 1945 atomic bomb.
Valerie Henmi and Jin-Wah Lau, students of Integrated Farm System Instructor Dr. Sharad Maharatta, had works accepted for publication in the Journal of the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture. Valerie’s article was “Management of plant-parasitic and beneficial nematodes with tropical cover crops.” Jin-wah’s article was “Can strawberry guava, Psidium cattleianum leaves be used for weed management in Hawai‘i?”
And my own book, “A Straight Road with 99 Curves”, was published in April by Stone Bridge Press of Berkeley, Calif. It’s available at Amazon as well as at traditional bookstores.
