Call. Write. Email or text. Stop by the office.
Either way, we want to hear from you.
Here’s the deal.
The Garden Island is your community paper. The people who live here should have a place to voice their opinion on matters important to them. That’s why we have a Forum page in TGI that’s published in print six days a week, as well as at our online site.
Our commitment to providing a sounding board, to being the place for community comments, is such that we maintain the Forum page when many dailies have eliminated or reduced the number of times they publish an opinions page. We believe it’s important our readers have a place where they can speak out. It’s there you might find your neighbor’s viewpoint on the latest county budget proposal. It’s there you might read your community leaders’ comments on our roads and bridges and the plans to fix them. It’s there you might hear praise of someone you didn’t even know.
One of the best ways to get the pulse of the community is to turn to the Forum page and see what folks are talking about. Ask people what’s one of the first things they read in TGI, and they’ll tell you: The letters.
So, to be perfectly clear, we want to hear your opinions. We want your thoughts in print. Your ideas make a difference. Can’t say it in less than 300 words? That’s OK. We’ll do our best to publish your longer commentaries. Just remember, shorter letters are generally published sooner than a 700-word guest commentary. Still, if there’s an issue you have lots to say about, send it to us.
That said, while our job is to sniff out the news and stories of the people who call Kaua‘i home, and we do that well, we can always use your help.
So if you hear about something you believe your local newspaper should know about, call us. While we do our best to cover everything and anything on Kaua‘i, it helps when someone gives us a ring.
Sure, we have our days in the office where reporters are hustling from assignment to assignment, while trying to finish one story and get on to the next. There are days the newsroom is buzzing and it seems overwhelming to put out another TGI.
But we have our slow days, too, when we’re on the hunt for news, for good features ideas. And that could be about your family, your neighbor, your favorite coffee shop or your favorite hiking trail. Don’t think your story ideas don’t matter.
Bottom line, we want to hear from you.
Give us your letters.
Give us your guest commentaries.
Give us a call.
