LIHU‘E — As a part of National Law Day 2013 commemorations, the Kaua‘i 5th Circuit Court is holding an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lihu‘e Courthouse at 3970 Ka‘ana Street.
This year, the National Law Day’s theme is “Realizing the Dream: Equality for All,” which celebrates the promise of equality under the law and the achievements of the civil and human rights movement.
“Law Day provides us with an unique opportunity to reach out and encourage the public to visit us and learn about the courts in their community,” 5th Circuit Chief Court Administrator David Lam said.
National Law Day events are being held at the state circuit court’s on each island. Light refreshments will be served and there will be informational tables with brochures and displays.
Hourly building tours of Circuit and District Court, Family Court, Drug Court and Adult and HOPE Probation will offer a behind-the-scenes look at how the court system operates. Staff will guide visitors through the various departments, programs and administrative functions, including the Legal Documents section and the Self-Help Center.
“Many people do not understand how the judicial system works, even though their lives are, directly or indirectly, significantly impacted by court decisions,” Lam said.
“The greater majority of criminal and civil cases are open to the public, however, unless it’s your case or you are associated with the litigants, very few people have actually watched a trial in person.
