NAWILIWILI — Nawiliwili Harbor shoreline got a trash cleanup and the Boys & Girls Club earned a $10,000 grant on Saturday.
Coming on the heels of the Malama Hulei‘a project where invasive mangrove was removed, the Rotary Club of Kaua‘i moved in to clear debris and trash from the area as its Weinberg Friends project.
In return for the effort that required at least 25 volunteers, the B&G Club, Lihu‘e Outreach will receive the Weinberg Friends Program grant of $10,000 donated on behalf of the Rotary Club of Kaua‘i.
“We are excited to share the news of this donation with our members who will be the recipients of a new clubhouse,” said Asaka Herman, the interim Lihu‘e Outreach director.
Funds will go toward the B&G Hawai‘i’s Lihu‘e Clubhouse renovation project.
“The Boys and Girls Club of Hawai‘i are making a wonderful contribution to the lives of many young people in our community, and we are in full support of this project to create a Lihu‘e Clubhouse,” said Tyler Chihara, the Weinberg Project chair for the Rotary Club of Kaua‘i.
The new clubhouse will address the space concerns of the Lihu‘e Outreach, whose members include youth ages 7 through 17.
Currently, the B&G Club, Lihu‘e Outreach serves more than 100 children in afterschool homework and tutoring assistance, sports programs and leagues, community service projects, health and life skills, arts and culture, and career development, said Tina Albao, the B&G Club Administrative Support.
The Lihu‘e Outreach also offers full-day programs during school intercession periods, Chihara said. Daily attendance has steadily increased to the point where there’s a waiting list.
During Saturday’s cleanup, the Rotarians utilized a double-hulled canoe to transport volunteers across the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor to collect trash on the southern shore of the Hulei‘a River. They removed an array of debris, including old boats that broke apart and were strewn along the shoreline.
Albao said the B&G Club, Lihu‘e Outreach will be hosting a party, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday to help paint the new Lihu‘e Clubhouse across from the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall near the Lihu‘e County Park.
