HANAPEPE — The Kapa‘a High School Warriors JV baseball team got past the Waimea High School Menehune 6-3 Thursday at Hanapepe Stadium in the final JV game of the season.
Waimea, Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i High School each played a four-game season in the JV programs inaugural season.
More important than the final score was the fact that there was a JV season. Despite being just four games long, coaches and young players are already getting experience and playing time at the high school level.
“It’s a good thing for the island of Kaua‘i,” said Waimea coach Clayton Yonahara. “It is a great opportunity for the younger kids to get game experience, otherwise they might not be playing.”
The games benefit the players and the future of each of the programs. It enables the coaches to see not just what they have this year but years down the road.
“It was good for us to evaluate what is up and coming,” said Kapa‘a head coach Bryan Aiwohi. “Both freshman and sophomores are put in a position to make plays, and it will help their confidence and it will help them get better and give us and idea of what we have.”
Although establishing a JV season on Kaua‘i was an important step, coaches would like to see the season expand further to help with player and program development.
“I think it will be great for Kaua‘i (to expand the season),” Yonahara said. “On O‘ahu they have been doing it for awhile now.”
