The surf report showed steady one-to-two foot waves rolling in yesterday, followed by two-to-three footers on tap for today as a number of Kaua‘i groms and amateurs headed to O‘ahu for the 2013 Hawai‘i Surfing Association State Championships at Ala Moana Bowls. The south shore reef break hosts the annual contest to crown statewide divisional champions and determine Hawai‘i’s representatives at nationals.
With heats scheduled to run from Thursday to Sunday, the state competition is the culmination of a four-event season for HSF Kaua‘i participants. Contests held at PK’s in Po‘ipu, Pine Trees in Hanalei, Intersections in Kekaha and, finally, Kealia, have created a cumulative points scale for all participants. The entirety of their performances made a number of surfers eligible to jump the puddle and compete against other top surfers from around the state.
While not all of Kaua‘i’s qualifying surfers elected to participate at this weekend’s contest, I want to give them well-deserved congratulations and recognition for their accomplishments this season.
