WAILUA — Kaua‘i’s Trevor Kua fired a two-under par 70 Friday to lead the Red Raider boys to the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation title by 16 strokes at the Wailua Golf Course.
The title came on the opening round of the 36-hole qualifying rounds with the winners heading to the David Ishii Foundation Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association.
Earlier, the Kaua‘i High School girls, led by Taylor Viquelia, locked up the team title.
Juston Thomas, Kapa‘a coach, said the boys team will send five golfers and two open positions. The girls team will have four spots with two open positions.
Kaua‘i boys locked up the team title with a combined 307 (70-73-81-83) compared with Kapa‘a’s 323 (78-80-81-84).
Kua, who finished the front nine at one-over 37, roared back on the back nine, carding a three-under par 33 for his two-under 70 in the voggy, misty conditions at Wailua.
Pono Tokioka, struggling through the past few weeks, shot a 73.
Jamie Amimoto shot an 81 and Braeden Robley an 83 to round out the team scoring.
Kainalu Gandia topped the Kapa‘a boys challenge with a 78 followed by Kenji Miyata’s 80, Kawika Wellington’s 81 and Bryden Salvador’s 84.
Tresten Nakashima shot a 93 and Derek Callejo at 99 for Waimea High School.
Following Friday’s round, Nakashima, Callejo, Kawena Warren (105) and Samantha Nichols (113) withdrew from the Saturday rounds played in improved conditions with virtually no wind, but humid conditions.
Gandia from Kapa‘a fired the best round Saturday, finishing with a one-over par 73 for a two-day 151.
But that was not enough to wrestle the lead from Kaua‘i‘s Kua who fired a 78, finishing with a two-day 148, three strokes ahead of Gandia.
With the top spot following 36 holes of qualifying, Kua secured the 2013 KIF individual boys champion.
Gandia and Miyata earned the two open spots for the state golf championships.
Tokioka, finishing the Saturday round at 81, settled at 154 following 36 holes.
Salvador finished the Saturday round at 77 for a two-day 161.
Jamie Amimoto finished in a tie at 78 with Kua for a 36-hole total of 159.
Other individualists on the boys’ course included Miyata at 156 (80-76), Wellington at 165 (81-84), Robley 163 (83-80), Kai Adachi 168 (84-84), Keith Jose 177 (85-92), Landen Ishida 170 (86-84), Vance Tokita 172 (87-85), Jacob Viquelia 175 (92-83), Justin Donios 190, Jeremy Felizardo 192, Anthony Aiwohi 190 and Michael Miller 187.
Taylor Viquelia charged to a two-under par 70 Saturday, finishing with an even-par 144 over two days. The left-handed golfer’s performance earned her the 2013 KIF individual tirls championship.
“The girls are battling for the two open spots,” said Kaua‘i coach Glenn Tamagawa on Saturday. “Right now, it’s anybody’s game between Na‘ea Oda of Kapa‘a, Mariah Paiste of Waimea and Kari Whitworth of Island School. They’re all pretty close.”
Oda, finishing Friday’s round at 82, was paired with Viquelia and Daezsa Tomas during the final round and finished with a consistent 83 for a two-day total of 165, and one of the two open girls’ spots.
Whitworth, golfing as Island School’s first woman golfer in the KIF, finished Friday’s round three strokes ahead of Paiste at 88. She also capitalized on the improved conditions Saturday to card an 86, finishing a stroke ahead of Paiste for a two-day 174, and the second open spot.
Paiste finished with a two-day 178 (91-87).
Other girls on the course included Tomas 159 (79-80), Hiilani Alana 183 (97-86), Jenae Park 194 (98-96), and Randi Oxentine (120-112).
