LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School junior varsity baseball club hosted the Waimea High School Menehune in it final game of the season. The Raiders didn’t disappoint with a 9-3 win to finish its inaugural JV season 3-0-1 while winning its last three games.
Kaua‘i was led by Tyler Toyofuku both on the mound and at the plate. Toyofuku pitched five innings and allowed three runs while striking out three Menehune batters. At the plate, Toyofuku finished 2 for 2 with a single, double and a pair of RBIs.
Freshman Brayden Abreu came in to close the game in the top of the sixth and struck out the side in an impressive inning.
Waimea pitchers struggled to find the strike zone allowing six walks and hitting two batters.
The Menehune scored all three runs in the top of the third inning as it rallied with a pair of hits from Levi Sagucio and J.P. Pagtolingan. Sagucio finished 1 for 2 with an RBI.
With the loss the JV Menehune fall to 1-2 on the season as it will prepare to take on the Kapa‘a Warriors in the final JV game of the season on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Hanapepe Stadium.
The second half of the varsity season is shaping out to be an exciting one. With the Red Raiders now 3-1, it has the opportunity to win the second half if they can manage to sweep the Warriors in a doubleheader today at Ron Martin Field in Kapa‘a. Game one has a start time of 10 a.m. with game two starting 30 minutes after game one finishes.
The Warriors are also in a good spot, they started the second half with 1-0 after beating the Raiders on April 10. If Kapa‘a can manage to sweep Kaua‘i or split the series, that would put them in the driver’s seat to grab the second half crown with Waimea sitting at 0-3.
Kapa‘a does still have 3 games left with the Menehune, and the first is coming up on Wednesday at Hanapepe Stadium. The final two games will be a continuation of a delayed game that was called due to weather on April 13. It has been rescheduled for April 27.
