LIHU‘E — The interim library at the Lihu‘e Public Library opened Monday to a constant stream of patrons.
“This is just the first day and we’re still setting up,” said Carolyn Larson, the Lihu‘e Public Library manager. “But we want our patrons to know we are still open while construction on the main library is going on.”
The interim library, 4344 Hardy St., is in the Lihu‘e Public Library meeting room, which has already undergone renovation work. Patrons are able to use the library’s regular parking area.
The main library area is closed temporarily for an Americans with Disabilities Act Renovation project that started on April 11.
During the closure of the main library, the interim library will offer a limited collection of books and DVDs.
“We know it will be inconvenient for library users to have the main library closed while this renovation project is going on, but we are pleased we can provide some library services during the months of construction,” Larson said.
Larson said the expected four-month project includes replacement of an outdated air conditioning system and picture windows that were damaged by hurricanes. New carpets, upgraded light fixtures and the creation of work spaces for the library’s staff are also scheduled.
“We have been looking forward to this renovation project for a long time and are excited to see it finally happen,” Larson said. “The library will not gain additional space, but it will have a more stable environment with improved climate control which will better protect our collections and make it more comfortable for our patrons.”
Hours for the interim library are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, the library is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The interim library is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
