LIHU‘E — Kapa‘a High School may have won the overall Rotary Track Meet, but all the participating schools had something to talk about, Thursday at the Vidinha Stadium complex, hosted by the Rotary Club of West Kaua‘i.
Kapa‘a piled up 401 points, the combined of both the boys (261) and the girls (144) score for the overall title, but Kaua‘i High School athletes were presented the Outstanding Male and Outstanding Female awards in Makena Lopez-Estacio and Kawehi Louis-Diamond.
Waimea’s girls finished tops in the division with 152 points, edging past Kapa‘a by eight points, led by junior Kawena Warren who finished second in the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles, but claimed top honors in the Girls 300 Meter Hurdles, and the Girls Long Jump, ending the day with a state qualifying standard and two consideration standards.
Warren’s team mate Talia Young topped the Girls Triple Jump on a leap of 31-07.25, a consideration standard as well as an improvement on her 30-08 previous best.
Finishing second below Louis-Diamond in the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles, Warren clocked in at 16.03, surpassing the state standard of 16.64. She added a consideration standard in the Girls 300 Meter Hurdles (51.13) and a consideration standard in the Girls Long Jump with a 15-07.25 leap.
Island School distance runner Joy Claypoole finished with consideration standards in the Girls 1,500 Meter Run (5:23.72) and in the Girls 3,000 Meter Run (12:04.98). She finished first in both events and also served as the opening runner for the Girls 4×400 Relay event.
Basil Scott, the KIF scorekeeper, said this is the first time Island School entered a 4×100 relay team, capturing first at 4:44.27 with members Claypoole, Chan Hsu, Jade Murphy, and Madison Moore.
Louis-Diamond topped the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles, capturing a qualifying standard with her 15.68 run. She also topped the Girls Shot Put at 28-02.50 and the Girls Discus at 100-10, a state consideration standard.
Kauai’s Chelsie Domingo topped the Girls 100 Meter Dash on a 13.09 run, getting a consideration standard in the effort.
Lopez-Estacio and Waimea’s Henry Delos Reyes were the two boys state qualifiers, Lopez-Estacio getting his state standard in the Boys Discus where he tossed the disc 154-07, a Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation record-breaking performance as well as a state qualifying toss.
Three others picked up consideration standards in the Boys Discus, Kapa‘a’s Unaloto Masaniai getting second at 137-02 followed by Holden Prem (136-06) and Rusty Ah Loo Brewer (131-11).
Lopez-Estacio also finished with a consideration standard with his first finish in the Boys Shot Put at 44-02.25 along with Kapa‘a’s Unaloto Masaniai at second with a placement of 43-06.75.
Delos Reyes captured his qualifying standard in the Boys Triple Jump with a leap of 42-00. He also finished with a consideration standard in the Boys Long Jump where he finished second at 19-10.75, a two-inch improvement over his previous best 19-08.75.
Kaua‘i’s Christian Sarmiento topped the Boys Long Jump on a 19-11.00, a consideration standard.
Scott, the KIF scorekeeper, said the meet finished with an exact tie for third and fourth place, a rare event, with Kapa‘a’s Joshua Cram getting third at 18-11.25 over Noah LaMadrid based on the second best jump.
Cram topped the Boys High Jump at 5-09, an inch improvement over his previous 5-08 and a consideration standard.
The Menehune Boys 4×100 Relay team copped a consideration standard with its first finish at 44.57, the team including Delos Reyes, Issac Fierro, Lopaka Ventura, and Destin Miguel.
Kapa‘a’s Storm Haire topped the Boys 300 Meter Hurdles on a 44.70 run, bettering his previous 46.88 and gaining a consideration standard.
Kaua‘i’s Andrew Burrow topped the Boys 400 Meter Dash on a 53,59 run, a consideration standard and bettering his previous 54.68 run.
Kapa‘a’s Michael Alonzo topped the Boys 100 Meter Dash, stopping the clock at 11.35 for a consideration standard.
The KIF hosts its final qualifying track and field meet, Thursday starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Vidinha Stadium.
There is no admission for this as well as the qualifying meet for the KIF Championship Meet next week. Admission will be charged for the finals of the KIF Championship.
