LIHU‘E — Shioi Construction Inc., a Kaua‘i General Contractor, was recognized for its work on the Pa’anau Village Phase II Project, a multifamily affordable housing project in Koloa.
The Hawai‘i General Contractors Association honored Shioi at the Build Hawai‘i Awards event in Honolulu April 6. The awards recognize the “best of the best in the area Construction Industry.”
“The Pa’anau Village Phase II project demonstrated what can be accomplished when successful partnerships are formed, where everyone works toward a common goal,” said James Abeshima, executive vice president, Shioi Construction. “This project set a standard for future affordable housing developments with its exemplary partnering efforts, budgeting practices and level of green enhancements and amenities.”
Pa‘anau Village Phase II was designed by the architectural firm of Design Partners Inc.
The Shioi project team consisted of Kyle Fujimoto, project manager, Randall Miyashiro, superintendent, and Coralyn Murayama, project administrator.
The construction started during a recessed Island economy, and Abeshima said that employing local businesses and labor was a priority.
Shioi had a local labor force of more than 165 workers on the project, totaling approximately $5.22 million in payroll.
“With our long history and connection to Kaua’i, we believed it was our obligation to meet this need,” he said. “Overall, 98 percent of the workforce employed for the Pa’anau Village project was on-island labor.
The challenge, according to Abeshima, was the 12-month schedule and all of the pieces that had to come together within that time.
“Fortunately, with the experienced Shioi staff and its many subcontractors and suppliers, we were able to complete (the project) successfully on time,” he said.
