UPDATE (7:45 p.m.): The severe thunderstorm watch for Kaua‘i has been cancelled, however Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau remain in a flash flood watch until 6 a.m. Sunday.
UPDATE (2 p.m.): The severe thunderstorm watch for Kaua‘i has been extended to 8 p.m. A flash flood watch also remains in effect for Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau until 6 a.m. Sunday.
A marine warning for Kaua‘i leeward waters is in effect until 2:45 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Mariners can expect gusty winds, locally higher seas and dangerous lightning, and are advised to seek safe harbor immediately until the storm passes.
Weather impacts on the Garden Island today include:
• The Kekaha landfill has been closed most of the day due to severe weather conditions, and the County’s transfer stations have discontinued accepting greenwaste until further notice.
• The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has announced that the Kalalau Trail will remain closed for the remainder of the day due to the possibility of flash flooding. DLNR will decide on Sunday morning whether the trail will be reopened.
UDPATE (11:50 a.m.): The Department of Land and Natural Resources announced the Kalalau Trail will remained closed through Saturday due to a flash flood watch. The trail was closed as a precautionary action Friday morning.
Hikers are advised not to take take the trail since they may find themselves on the far side of streams subject to flash flooding.
UPDATE (10:50 a.m.): Kaua‘i remains in a severe thunderstorm watch until 2 p.m. today. The National Weather Service has also issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the northwest, windward and leeward waters of Kaua‘i until 2 p.m.
The Kekaha landfill remains closed and greenwaste is not being accepted at County facilities due to severe weather conditions. In addition, the Hanapepe transfer station is not accepting scrap metal. All transfer stations remain open as scheduled and are accepting mixed waste.
In addition, a special marine warning has been issued for the Kaua‘i Channel, and Kaua‘i’s leeward and windward waters until 11:15 a.m. today. Mariners can expect gusty winds, locally higher seas and dangerous lightning, and are advised to seek safe harbor immediately until the storm passes.

UPDATE (10:30 a.m.): Kaua‘i remains in a flood advisory until 1 p.m. today, according to a County press release.
A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Severe thunderstorms can produce damaging winds and hail.
The landfill in Kekaha will be closed until further notice due to reported lightning in the area. All other county solid waste facilities remain open as scheduled at this time.
