LIHU‘E — For the second year in a row, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School’s Skills USA team took first place in the General Technology Challenge at the 23rd annual State Leadership Conference and Competition on O‘ahu, Feb. 20 to 21.
Skills USA fosters personal, leadership and professional development for students in the field of industrial and engineering programs. The nonprofit organization helps to provide quality educational experiences through competitions that use teamwork to build and reinforce self-confidence, work attitudes and communications skills.
During the general technology challenge, teams of three were given five hours to design, build and draft to scale, the fastest self-propelled car with unknown materials provided. Not only did the winning team need to build and test their fastest car, but they were judged on professionalism aptitudes.

James Tokioka and Derek Kawakami treated the students to breakfast and a private tour of the state Capitol after receiving personalized legislative certificates honoring them for their accomplishments.
A&B Properties, Inc. provided a $1,000 grant.
Students include Scott Cushnie, Ryan Smith, Kuulei Ikeda (first place winner), Cameron Navor, Ben Brady, Sydney Brady, Rina Takabayashi, Kaylee Braun, Seely Beyer, Shirying Tay, Mariflor DelosSantos and Kiyib Erina Gardithin.
