LIHU‘E — Island School, Kaua‘i High School and Waimea High School had girls marking state qualifying standards, but Kapa‘a High School girls topped the team rankings with 132 points, Thursday at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation Qualifying Track Meet No. 5 at Vidinha Stadium.
Michael Alonzo and Unaloto Masaniai pocketed two state consideration standards, followed by Joshua Cram and Rusty Ah Loo Brewer each getting one consideration standard to lead the Kapa‘a boys to a 231-point showing in the team rankings.
Kaua‘i girls, getting one qualifying standard and three consideration standards, finished second with 127 points followed by Waimea, getting one qualifying standard, at 120 points and Island School, with a qualifying standard, ending with 16 points.
On the boys’ arena, Kaua‘i boys, picking up a qualifying standard which soars past a KIF record, and six consideration standards finished with 138 points followed by Waimea, getting three consideration marks, with 86 points and Island School with four points.
Joy Claypoole of Island School headlined the girls’ overall performance, claiming first place in the Girls 3,000 Meter Run on 11:29.45, a qualifying run, but bettering the existing KIF record of 11:32.98 she set in 2011.
Kawehi Louis-Diamond led the way for Kaua‘i High School, securing a qualifying run in the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles on a 15.99 run, challenged by Waimea’s Kawena Warren, a junior, who finished second, but with a state qualifying run of 16.23.
Another redshirt, McKenna Lopez-Estacio, finished with a qualifying mark in the Boys Discus and claimed a consideration standard in the Boys Shot Put to lead the boys’ performance which saw 16 consideration standards being distributed among the field of athletes from four high schools.
Lopez-Estacio tossed the discus 157-03 to surpass the existing KIF record of 151-10 and claim a qualifying standard. He finished second to Kapa‘a’s Unaloto Masaniai in the Boys Shot Put with a placement of 42-10.25 for a consideration mark to Masaniai’s 44-02.25.
Masaniai finished with a consideration mark in the Boys Discus, ending in the runner-up spot on a 134-08 to Lopez-Estacio’s 157-03. Kapa‘a’s Rusty Ah Loo Brewer finished in third with a consideration mark of 130-10.
Following Lopez-Estacio’s lead, Kaua‘i leaper Christian Sarmiento finished with three consideration standards including the Boys Long Jump (20-10.5), Boys Triple Jump (41-01.25) and the Boys High Jump at 5-08, tying Kapa‘a’s Joshua Cram for top honors.
Kaua‘i distance runner Joshua Herr pocketed two consideration marks with his first finish in the Boys 1,500 Meter Run (4:26.08) and the Boys 800 Meter Run (2:08.71) where he set the pace for two other Red Raiders, Austin Manera (2:09.13) and Charles Samuel (2:09.94), all three Raiders getting consideration marks.
Michael Alonzo of Kapa‘a set the pace on the track for the Warriors, pocketing two consideration standards in the 100 Meter Dash (11.30) and the 200 Meter Dash (23.01).
Waimea High School picked up its consideration marks in the Boys 4×100 Relay (23.24) with its first finish and Destin Miguel getting a consideration mark in his runner-up finish in the 200 Meter Dash (23.24).
Henry Delos Reyes rounded out the Waimea marks with his runner-up finish in the Boys Triple Jump (39-08.50).
Following Claypoole, Kaua‘i’s Krista Schnackenberg picked up two consideration marks, each coming with a first finish in the Girls 800 Meter Run (2:34.62) and in the Girls 1,500 Meter Run (5:10.99).
Heidi Herr, Joshua’s younger sister, captured her consideration mark in the Girls 3,000 Meter Run, finishing 11:56.53 in the runner-up berth below Claypoole.
Results from the 100 Meter Dash were not included with these results due to a technical error.
The public is invited to view more track and field competition among the KIF high schools when the Rotary Club of West Kaua‘i hosts the 66th Annual Rotary Club track meet, Thursday starting at 4:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium.
Rotarian Dave Walker, a longtime track and field coach, said there is no admission.
“The only one where admission is charged is the KIF Championships,” Walker said.
