HANAPEPE — The Garden Island Orchid Society opened the doors to its annual Spring Fantasy Orchid Show and Sale Friday at Hanapepe United Church of Christ social hall.
Judges carefully scrutinized the specimens submitted for consideration of prizes from the GIOS, looking for subtle differences between plants cultivated by the different growers.
Supplementing the orchid exhibition, growers were on hand to sell some of their stock, many of which were on exhibit as competitive pieces.
Joining the orchid growers, Ada Koene, a GIOS member who also photographs orchid specimens, had some of her work on sale, being supplemented by an array of sewn goods featuring orchid print material.
She also added a line of home-made jams and jellies.
Kathy Kovala, a watercolor artist and instructor, also had orchid prints available for enthusiasts.
“I’ve been doing this show for a long time,” said Kovala, who recently closed a successful “Eggs hibition” show at Kaua‘i Society of Artists gallery. “I’ll be here for another month since my students don’t want me to leave. That meant I could still do this GIOS event.”
Kovala said she plans to do some on-site painting in the spirit of plein air.
She’ll be joined by other plein air artists who are invited to participate in the 7th Annual Orchid & Art Festival, which will overflow from the orchid show into neighboring historic Hanapepe town.
This morning, the Friends of the Hanapepe Public Library craft fair will take place in the library’s meeting room located across the parking lot from the Hanapepe UCC social hall from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Marionette Taboniar of Women Artists on Kaua‘i will lead a watercolor painting workshop at the Hawaiian Congregational Church from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Circles of Light will host children’s art activities from noon to 4 p.m.
The art will be supplemented with Kindermusik, a variety of children’s musical activities from noon to 4 p.m.
Visit www.hanapepe.org for a complete schedule of events on tap for Saturday.
