KAPA‘A — A 41-year-old California man died Thursday afternoon while swimming in waters off Kapa‘a.
The man’s identity has not yet been released.
Police Dispatch received a call at around 2:50 p.m. to report a swimmer who appeared to be in distress in waters fronting a vacant lot next to the Plantation Hale Hotel.
Bystanders attempted to assist the man, according to county officials, before firefighters arrived at the scene.
Firefighters assisted in bringing the man’s unresponsive body to shore and began performing CPR.
Medics then transported the man to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
This is Kaua‘i’s 11th reported drowning this year.
The National Weather Service has posted a high surf warning for all north- and west-facing shores until at least 6 a.m. Saturday.
Waves are predicted to reach 20 to 25 feet, according to the service.
Large breaking waves, significant shore breaks and dangerous currents will make entering the water hazardous.
Officials warn that anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death.
Lifeguards urge beachgoers to swim near a lifeguard tower.
