WAILUA — One student from Kaua‘i, Kapa‘a and Waimea high schools accepted cash awards from the Mahelona Hospital Auxiliary for their goals of a profession in the medical field Thursday at the Wailua Marina Restaurant.
Betty Matsumura, president of the Auxiliary, was joined by Myra Ornellas, the administrator for the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, and the Auxiliary Board of Directors, which hosted the recipient students and their parents to the luncheon.
“This is a really good award because the students can use it for anything,” Ornellas said. “It’s a cash award that they will hopefully put to good use.”
Charlotte Ka‘auamo will be graduating Waimea High School and is planning on attending Kaua‘i Community College with a major in nursing. She is the daughter of Benjamin and Michelle Ka‘auamo.
She will be joined by Jayson Viernes of Kapa‘a High School, who will also be heading to KCC with an eye toward nursing. He is the son of Reggino and Fe Viernes.
Jessie Chang, who will take her commencement walk at Kaua‘i High School, is headed for a pre-med degree at the University of Colorado at Denver. She is the daughter of Lee Takekuma.
Funds for the scholarships geared to students pursuing a study in the medical field are generated in part by the Mahelona Hospital Thrift Shop, which is operated by the Auxiliary, in addition to its other activities, which also generate funds for scholarships.
