LIHU‘E — Kapa‘a High School tennis swept its series over Island School Saturday at Kaua‘i Community College tennis courts.
Working between bouts of showers which sprinkled the courts sending players scrambling to the cover of quick tents, Island School gave up three bouts in the boys matches to defaults, Kapa‘a taking the Boys First Singles and the Boys First Doubles on a 5-0 score.
The Warrior girls worked a little harder, dropping its two singles matches, but taking all three of its doubles bouts to walk off with a 3-2 win over the Voyagers.
Kalani Murakami opened with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Island School’s Keoni Boemer in the Boys First Singles while the Warrior team of Kailer Scopacasa and Matt Steinorht defeated the Voyager pair of Sam Goldberg and Phillip Zaviryukha.
Kapa‘a won the Boys Second Singles, Second Doubles and Third Doubles by default.
On the girls’ court, Island School’s Michaela Fitzgerald got past a hard-fighting Kiarra Tamayose, 6-4, 6-3, despite Tamayose getting strong gallery support from her teammates in the Girls First Singles matchup.
Island School rounded out its wins in the Girls Second Singles as Katy Davidson downed Casey Nakamura, 6-1, 6-2, Nakamura also getting strong support from her family and teammates for her court hustle.
The Warrior girls rebounded on the doubles courts, its team of Kara Higa and Taylor Anama outlasting the Island School dueo of April Oo and Alex Obert, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in a tiebreaker in the Girls First Doubles.
On the Girls Second Doubles court, the Warrior dueo of Nani Bron and Bee Sawallak Khae-Chawat defeated the Island School pair of Kalena Wong and Joy Claypoole, 6-2, 6-2.
The Girls Third Doubles court saw Kapa‘a’s Amber Diaz teaming with Cassady Yatsko who defeated the Island School pair of Whitney Summerhays and Alyssa Medd, 6-3, 6-0, the Voyagers also exhibiting a lot of hustle in the loss.
Kapa‘a’s Wylie Barker teamed with Alana Bauman to get past Island School’s Genevieve Foster and Briana Griep, 8-4 in an exhibition match.
No results from the Kaua‘i High School and Waimea High School matches were available by press time.
Kaua‘i High School will host Kapa‘a at the Kiahuna Swim and Tennis Club, Saturday starting at 10 a.m. while Island School will travel to the Waimea High School tennis courts.
Waimea athletic director Jon Kobayashi said originally the match was scheduled for Hanapepe tennis courts, but due to court conditions, the matches have been relocated to Waimea High School campus.
