LIHU‘E — Representatives of Project Graduation programs from Waimea, Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a high schools got a boost in their fundraising Wednesday when State Farm Insurance presented each school’s program a cash contribution.
“State Farm Insurance has always helped the youth stay safe,” said Darrellyn Lemke. “State Farm Insurance has backed programs like the bicycle safety clinics and even participated once in the Shattered Dreams program, which sends a message of ‘Don’t drink and drive,’ especially, to young people.”
Project Graduation programs allow graduating seniors to celebrate their commencement from high school in a chaperoned, safe drug-, alcohol- and tobacco-free environment, keeping them off the roads during their graduation night.
With high school commencement exercises scheduled for late May, the Project Graduation committees are winding down their fundraising and gearing up for the actual celebrations.
“This is it for us,” said Lynn Tamashiro of the Waimea Project Grad. “We have been doing fundraising all year, and appreciate everything that everyone has done for us.”
Darnell Aquino, the Kaua‘i High School Project Grad chairperson, said the school will host one more big fundraising effort on April 17 when they host the McNight event at the Lihu‘e McDonald’s restaurant. Raquel Silva, representing the Kapa‘a High School Project Grad, said its chairperson, Cassie Camara, also has a final fundraising effort coming up, but details were not available at press time.
