A world in chaos
A depleting ozone layer, earthquakes, tsunamis, meteors striking earth such as the one that hit Russia and sick pollution literally are just a few of the problems our pristine and fragile planet earth is facing.
With the way government is going, a one world government is just around the corner.
I predict China’s currency will take over the world and the once popular dollar will fade into the horizon.
What scares me the most is the depletion of planet earth’s ozone layer. If the ozone layer disappears, you can kiss good-bye to modern man’s existence on planet earth.
This is due to the greed held in the heart and soul of mankind, which isn’t too smart. Like the intelligent, talented and great Bob Marley said, there is “so much trouble In the world.”
I am a graduate of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo system and disagreed with virtually everything that was taught.
Today, what I preached is coming true and the book on planet earth seems to be coming to a close. Enough said!

Cost-U-More
How efficient is our county with our tax dollars? For example, federal health services (VA and Medi coverage) spend less than 15 cents of each dollar of revenue on internal expenses, and over 85 cents on providing services. Out of each dollar the county collects, what percentage goes to internal expenses, and what percentage goes to providing services?
Bravo to the Kaua‘i County Council, County Clerk’s Office, and Council Services for recently earning public acknowledgment and praise for leading this state in Sunshine Law transparency and access to public information.
I hope the council will provide similar state leadership in reducing the size and increasing efficiency in our county enterprise.
Bravo to the mayor for slowing his spending spree, and reducing our $15 million operating deficit.
It is the Office of the County Auditor that discovered the waste and saved the taxpayers well over $400,000 a year in unnecessary overtime and sick leave, ended excessive vacation pay for various public servants, and reduced fuel and other procurement expenses. Given the county auditor’s success in real expense reductions, what budget increases can we expect for the auditor?
Bravo to the mayor for ending his hiring spree.
There are now five administration managers earning $100,000 per year involved in reforming and modernizing Human Resources. After three years of action, our millions of dollars in wages and benefits with lifetime job security recently decided to hire a consultant.
Objective performance evaluations and accountability for all managers would be a good start for court-ordered HR reform.
Creating more county manager positions is not economic development. Depleting our budget surplus to fund payroll growth was not prudent.
Instead of raising property taxes to match revenues at the height of the real estate bubble, why don’t we reduce expenditures to match the size of the economy we now have?

Cool his heels in jail
It is rewarding to those of us who have lost loved ones to drunken drivers to read that Richard Godbehere Jr. was arrested for his arrogant and self-absorbed video of himself drinking and driving without a valid driver’s license.
I would hope that he gets to cool his heels in jail for this.

Drunken driving
To Kimo Rosen: Drunken driving is a serious offense.
How many innocent people have died because of it?
And how many more will die because of lax enforcement?

It’s the Republicans!
Tashi Maclaine’s letter March 22, about learning from Iceland, brings up an important point.
When they discovered that their banks had colluded to commit fraud against the citizenry, they nationalized the banks and put the banksters in jail.
Now, their economy is healthy, while in the U.S. — and elsewhere, such as Cyprus — the banksters are demanding “austerity” and still being paid off for their crimes.
Remember, it is the Republicans who are insisting on “austerity.”
