HANAPEPE — The second junior varsity baseball game of the season took place at Hanapepe Stadium as the Waimea High School Menehune hosted the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders Thursday evening.
The Red Raiders would came out on top of what would turn into a high scoring affair. Kaua‘i would win 11-6 in a shootout that lasted just 5 innings due to time and light.
The game started in sloppy fashion with a number of walks and and hit batsman, which enabled six 1st inning runs among the two clubs. The Menehune benefitted by jumping out to a 4-2 lead after the opening inning.
Unfortunately, The Menehune would continue with its erratic pitching and finished with 10 walks, which would come back to haunt Waimea as the Red Raiders would eventually make them pay.
With Kaua‘i trailing 6-5 after three innings, the Menehune would again ignite a Red Raiders rally in the fourth by walking five straight batters with one out. That turned into back-to-back hits from John Dumlao and Micah Layosa that put the Red Raiders up 10-6.
For Waimea, Kailan Pablo-Otoman and Drayden Compos-Banasihan went to 2 for 3, while Jordan Baptista went 1 for 2 and started for the Menehune.
Layosa led the way offensively for Kaua‘i going 2 for 2, and Tyler Toyofuku and Jared Killeen went 1 for 2 and Toyofuku pitched 4 innings for Kaua‘i.
Doug Miyasato would come in to relieve Toyofuku and pitched a dominant fifth and final inning. Miyasato struck out two of the four batters he would face.
Kaua‘i’s JV team improves to 1-0-1 on the year while Waimea drops to 0-1. Waimea will take on the Kapa‘a High School Warriors (0-0-1) on Thursday in the next JV bout.
The Red Raider varsity club will be in action today at Vidinha Stadium against the Warriors in a doubleheader. Kaua‘i is still searching for its first win of the year.
