LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i’s Civil Air Patrol Composite Squadron cadets launched its spring break with a weekend of instruction in an Urban Direction Finder team training exercise, which also included camping out at the Lydgate Beach Park.
During the exercise, the CAP cadets were trained in operating hand-held electronic tracking equipment, which locates Emergency Locator Transmitter beacons equipped in all aircrafts operating in Hawai‘i and on many boats that operate in Hawai‘i’s waters.
In times of distress, the affected craft turn on ELTs so search and rescue resources and responders are able to respond to their location with minimal delay.
Students, during the weekend exercise, received classroom training and completed an exercise conducted north of Lihu‘e using an ELT training transmitter.
A CAP aircraft tracked and communicated with the cadet ground teams to locate a hidden training ELT using hand-held electronic tracking equipment.
The Civil Air Patrol is the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, and the Kaua‘i Composite Squadron includes 98 adults and teenage members based at the Lihu‘e Airport with three CAP aircrafts.
